Former Clayton County Resident Died in Newport / The following item was taken from the last issue of the Newport, (Wash.) Miner:
William H. Bernhard died at his home in Newport, Wednesday, April 3rd, after an illness of several months.
Mr. Bernhard was born in Clayton county, Iowa, May 12, 1863. He entered the teaching profession in his home county after graduating from Upper Iowa University at Fayette. In 1898 he was married at Elkader, Iowa, to Emma C. Wolf, who preceded him in death Dec. 20th, 1923. He was principal of the schools at Clayton, Iowa, and later removed to McLeod, South Dakota, where he was in the lumber business. In 1913 the family came to Newport and Mr. Bernhard was employee of the Humbird Lumber company until his illness last fall. He was a long time member of the Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen of America.
He is survived by three children, Clayton V., editor of the Coos Bay Times, Marshfield, Ore.; Luana and Howard, of Newport.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the M. E. church at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. J. R. Butler officiating.
