Monona's Oldest Citizen Laid to Rest
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 9, 1974, at the Schultz Funeral Home in Monona for Emma Kuthe, who died on December 6, at the age of 100 years and 7 months at the Good Samaritan Home at Postville.Pastor Ehlers officiated at the service. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Harlin Bentien, LaAllen Lange, Calvin Kurth, Gene Kurth, Keith Kishman and Wm. Tempelton. Burial was in the Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery.
Emma Sophia Benzing Kuthe, the daughter of Henry Benzing and nee Wilhelmina Meier, was born May 6, 1874 at Farmersburg. She was baptized Oct. 1874 at Clayton Center by Rev. Seifert in the Lutheran faith, and also confirmed by Rev. Seifert at Clayton Center.
She died Dec. 6, 1974 at the age of 100 years and 7 months, at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville. she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
On Nov. 28, 1894, she was married to Richard Kuthe at Clayton Center. To this union five children were born. Surviving are Mrs. Ruth Sass, Mr. Harvey Kuthe, Mrs. Raymond (Adeline) Kottman, all of Monona; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Will (Emma) Appel of Riceville; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren; 2 half-sisters - Mrs.Daliha Heins of Monona and Mrs. Sophia Benzing of Calmar; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband in Sept. 1939, one son, Harry, and one daughter, Ruby; one great-grand-child in infancy; three sisters and two brothers, three half sisters and three half brothers.
