Funeral services for Gustav Mentzel, 74, were held from the Witt Funeral chapel at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon to the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Mr. Mentzel had suffered from a heart condition for the past four years. The greater part of the past year he had been confined to his home, where he died shortly before noon Monday, May 12.

Gustav Mentzel, the son of Gustav and Eliza (Dohrer) Mentzel, was born at Osborne on April 05, 1873. His entire life until he retired and moved to Elkader in March, 1937, was spent in Cox Creek township. He was married to Mayme Lange at Mederville, on June 12, 1901. They went to Housekeeping on the farm of Mr. Mentzel's parents, where they lived for seven years, after which they took up farming for themselves. In 1923 their son-in-law, V. C. Wright, took over the operation of the farm and in 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Mentzel moved to Elkader, which has since been their home. Mr. Mentzel was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Julius of Elkader and Arthur of Waukon, and one daughter, Mrs. V. C. (Ameta) Wright, Elkader; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Schroeder of Wadena; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A daughter, Mrs. Greg (Alvina) Detmer, preceded him in death August 30, 1943.

Pallbearers were: Milton Monlux, E. C. Bandow, Elmer Bente, Milton Klink, Owen Wright and Lester Robbins.

People from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Oliver Edwards and Mrs. Matilda Wickler, both of Galena, Ill.; Mrs. Wm. West, Hazel Green, Wis.; Mrs. T. J. Ellison and Mrs. Wm. Ellison, both of Rock Island, Ill.; Mrs. Elva Chase and Lou Griffin Garner; Miss Virginia Detmer, Terre Haute, Ind.; Mrs. Walter Ditzler, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brennan, Waukon, and Lester Robbins, Postville.
