Gustav H. Wilke, 73, an Elkader business man for many years and a former Clayton county treasurer, died at his home here Tuesday, May 13, following a week's illness.

Services were held from the family home at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon to the Congregational Christian church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Herbert G. Kelly officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery, with the Masons in charge at the grave.

The son of Henry W. and Anna M. Gossman Wilke, he was born in Elkader February 28, 1874. He graduated from the Elkader high school and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette, Iowa. He was married to Anna Paul of Elkader on December 01, 1896.

With the exception of a number of winters spent in Florida and California and a year at Strawberry Point his entire life was spent in Elkader.

For many years he was in the mercantile business with his father. Later he was assistant cashier in the Elkader State Bank and from 1919 to 1921 he served as treasurer of Clayton county. He resigned to become cashier of the First National Bank at Strawberry Point, later returning to Elkader. He was a member of the Congregational Christian church and served as its treasurer for a number of years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. Last year he was awarded a fifty-year certificate as a member of Elkader lodge No. 72, A.F. & A.M.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilke celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 01 last year.

Surviving are his wife and three children, Mrs. Phyllis Patterson, Elkader; Paul W. Wilke, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Dorothy E. Gates, Wellesley Hills, Mass.; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Hopeman, Northfield, Minn.; Miss Ida Wilke and Mrs. Jessie Conrad, both of Elkader; Three grandsons, Paul W. Wilke, Jr., Minneapolis, Minn; Peter Wilke, Los Angeles, Calif., and H. Phelps Gates, Jr. Wellesley Hills, Mass.; and two step-granddaughters, Louise Gates of Wellesley Hills, Mass., and Ann Gates, Chicago, Ill.

Pallbearers were Milton Monlux, M. T. Hamilton, Julius Pahlas, Robert Bush, Everett Hagensick, and J. W. Downie.

Honorary pallbearers were W. W. Davidson, William F. Becker, Dr. J. P. Donlon, and M. J. Garaghty.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Paul W. Wilke, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Dorothy Gates, Wellesley Hills, Mass.; Paul W. Wilke, Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hopeman, Northfield, Minn.
