Funeral services for William C. Costigan, 83, life-long resident of Elkport and vicinity, were held at St. Michael's church in Garber at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, Jan. 25. The Rev. Father F. J. McEnany officiated at requiem high mass. Burial was in Mount Harmony cemetery at Elkport.
William C. Costigan died after a short illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Schrader, in Monticello, where he had gone to spend the winter months.
William C. Costigan was born on a farm near Elkport on Aug. 19, 1863, the son of Patrick and Mary Costigan. He received his education in the grade school of the vicinity. In the year 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Beddow of Elkport. The couple went to housekeeping on the farm of the bridegroom's parents where they lived during their entire lives and which is now occupied by their son, George Costigan.
Mr. Costigan was active in civic affairs of his community. He served for many years as secretary of the Garber school board and as secretary of the Garber Commission company. He was also a director of the Elkport State Bank and prominent in Republican circles. He was a member of St. Michael's church in Garber.
He was an extensive traveler, having visited every state in the union. At the age of 76 years he attended both World's Fairs in New York and San Francisco.
He is survived by three sons and three daughters, John and George of Elkport, Warren of Luxemburg, Mrs. George Koehn, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Henry Schrader, Monticello, and Mrs. Leslie Oelke, Elkader, and one brother, James Costigan of Lawler, and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, three brothers, Michael, John and Dan, and one sister, Anna Meehan.
Pallbearers were: Fred Schrader, Harry Hoffman, Dr. G. M. Thein, Henry Schnepf, Raymond Connelly and Alfred Hall.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. Frank Anderson, St. Paul, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Reade Piper, Battle Creek, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Merle Costigan, Jim Costigan, Willie Costigan and daughter Mary, Miss Alice Costigan, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Costigan and daughter Myrna, Mrs. P. J. Arrons, all of Lawler; Mrs. John Murray, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. John Matthews, West Union, and Gilbert Rutledge, Cedar Rapids.
