Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Harry Stephens at the A. H. Wells home at 1:30 and burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Casket-bearers were: Lyle Barthel, Ab. Cheeseman, William Muench, Jess Stephens, Lawrence Hulverson and Roy Zieger.
Mrs. Harriet Emily Stephens, born Hattie Wells, was born March 02, 1897, on a farm near Elkader, and died in a hospital at Dubuque, Friday, Oct. 18 at the age of 43 years, 7 months and 16 days.
The deceased was reared on a farm near here attending and graduating from the Elkader public school.
On March 03, 1921, she was united in marriage to Harry Stephens at Elkader. Three children were born to this union: Irene, Leroy and Easton all at home.
The deceased had been sick for the past month but was not thought to be in any serious condition until last week Tuesday when she was taken to the hospital. Blood transfusions were deemed necessary and her husband and three children were the donors. In spite of all human efforts, she died Friday morning. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides the afore-named three children, her husband, four sisters and one brother: Freda Wells, Elkader, Mrs. Myra Hulverson, Volga, Mrs. Amy Zeiger, Webster City, Mrs. Shirley Clark of Gunder and the brother, Bud Wells of Elkader. Her father preceded her in death in the year 1939 and her mother in the year 1932.
