Clayton County Register, 25 Sept. 1940.

With the death of Mrs. Reuben Kuempel of Guttenberg at 3 o'clock on Monday afternoon at the Postville Community hospital, the family not alone lost a wonderful mother, but the young folks in this community a true friend.

Born Evelyn Hays Baldwin at Cascade, Iowa on March 14, 1887, the daughter of State Senator Isaac Baldwin and Jean Hays McGregor Baldwin, Mrs. Kuempel received her early education in the Cascade public schools. She graduated from the Savanna, Illinois high school in 1909, in 1912 from the Finley hospital school of nursing. She took post graduate work in nurse's training at the Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago, and for a number of years was a registered nurse in Dubuque and vicinity.

In July 1917 she was united in marriage to Reuben Kuempel by Rev. Clokey of the Westminster Presbyterian church in Dubuque. To this union were born three daughters, Jean of Cleveland, Mary Elizabeth attending the University of Iowa, and Audrey Ann, and one son Hugh. Her brothers Frank of Cascade and Rolland of Cresco are the only surviving members of her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Berdina and Mrs. Maude Linn, and three brothers, Charles, Bruce, and Walter. The past eighteen years of Mrs. Kuempel's life have been spent in Guttenberg, during which time she became long time member and past president of the Ingleside club, and had a great opportunity to exploit her fondest desires in Young America by being one of the charter members and only president of the Juliette Lowe club founded some eleven years ago, and sponsors of the Guttenberg Girl Scouts.

Her greatest pleasure was derived in providing plenty of good instructive fun for both her own and the neighborhood children and as such she will be long remembered. For some years she had been a victim of heart ailment and it was thought best to place her in the hospital for recuperative treatment. For a time her condition appeared to improve, and it seemed she would soon regain her normal strength. The Great Creator had ordained differently, and she died on Monday, September 16th.

Burial services were held from the Masonic Temple in Guttenberg on Thursday, Sept. 19th at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dale Welch of the University of Dubuque officiating. The pall bearers were Dr. A. E. Beyer, Dr. G. C. Miller, C. J. Adams, G. W. Hunt, John Adam, and F. J. Friedlein. Burial was made in the City Cemetery.
