Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon for William Heitkamp, Sr., who died at his home Saturday evening, June 01, at the age of 83 years, five months and 21 days.
Mr. Heitkamp had been a lifelong resident of Clayton county. He was born December 10th, 1856, and the first part of his life was spent farming - first in Cox Creek township and then near Farmersburg, where he lived five years. For more than 40 years he was a resident of Elkader and while living here he followed the carpenter and paper-hanging trade.
In the year 1879, on August 21, he was united in marriage with Lena Hamann. Two children were born to this union - William, Jr., and Charles. The former preceded his father in death on September 29, 1939; the latter resides in McGregor.
Mr. Heitkamp enjoyed good health all his life until ten days ago when he became ill, but his death came suddenly and unexpectedly.
He leaves to mourn, besides his widow and son Charles, one sister - Mrs. Sam Stillinger of Colesburg and one grandchild - Ivanell Heitkamp of this place.
Burial was made in the East Side Cemetery after services at the late home and the Frieden's Evangelical church with the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Casketbearers were: F. E. Sharp, Fred Wistrick, Henry Benschneider, George Ehrhardt, John Schneider and John Downey.
Relatives from a distance who attended the services included: Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stillinger, Colesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hamann, Waukon; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Heiden, Wadena, and Mrs. May Staebler, Mason City.
