Clayton County Register, 01 May 1940.

John Frederick Hohman was born the fourth of five children of the blacksmith William Hohman and his wife Anna, nee Ritter, at Elkport, Iowa, March 17, 1883. He died in the Findley Hospital in Dubuque, Sunday, April 21, at the age of 57 years, one month and four days.

He attended the grade school and Lutheran parochial school at Elkport. At the tender age of only four years he lost his father. He never married but in filial devotion to his mother he was, for many years, the mainstay of the family. Industrious and thrifty he engaged in whatever work his hands could find. However, a serious illness, 12 years ago, caused an operation which while lengthening his life diminished his strength. Illness overtook him again Friday, April 19. Unexpectedly he died under all possible care by his family and physicians at Elkader and Dubuque, Sunday, April 21, at 9:45 in the evening, embolism having been the immediate cause.

John Hohman was an honest and upright citizen, a Christian character and always a true friend.

His father preceded him in death in 1887, his mother in 1938 and his brother Henry, who drowned at the age of 20, in 1897.

He leaves sorrowing, his two sisters and a brother: Mary, Mrs. Joseph Meyer at Elkader, Matilda, Mrs. Henry Fritz and August Hohman of Elkport, other relatives and many friends.

Last rites were conducted by Pastor Leon Gehret, April 24, in the house and Immanuel Lutheran church at Elkport. The church choir sang, "Abide With Me" and "Asleep in Jesus." Interment was made in the Immanuel cemetery. Pallbearers were John Thein, William Freitag, Charles Peuker, Realto Berens, Frank Sheffert and Emil Zittergruen. May his soul rest in peace!
