The deceased, Mr. Albert August Sommer, was born in Logerdorf, Kreis Steinberg, Germany, on the 24th of April, 1888, and died at home in Farmersburg township, April 17, 1940, at the age of 51 years, 11 months and 23 days.
Mr. Sommer spent the first 21 years of his life in Germany. There he received his education, was baptized and confirmed. His early manhood he spent working in the shipyards. When 21 he joined the German navy and served the three years required. After being released from the navy he began work on ocean liners, as a fireman. Landing in New York on the Fatherland, just as the United States entered the World War, he was unable to return to his native land. He came to Clayton county and remained here for about a year, then moved to Montana where he resided for two years. For the past 16 years he has resided on farms near Elkader.
On Feb. 12, 1924, Mr. Sommer was united in marriage to Alice Steemann. Three children were born to this union, Mildred Mae, Milton Albert, LaNida Ann, all surviving him in death.
The deceased was called upon to go through much suffering during the past two years. In spite of much medical aid he steadily became worse, and for the last week was fully aware that he would have to depart from this life.
He is survived by his widow and three children, a sister still in Germany. His parents and one brother preceded him in death.
