Mrs. John Eckford died in Madison, Wis., February 24, following an illness of two months. Funeral services were held here yesterday afternoon with the Rev. N. O. Bartholomew officiating. Burial was made at National.
Mrs. John Eckford, Amy Sarah Crary, daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Oliver W. Crary, was born in Farmersburg township, Feb. 25, 1879. She attended school at Decorah and received a degree at Iowa State Teachers college, following which she taught for several years.
In 1916 she was married to John Eckford at Choteau, Mont., where their only daughter, Jean, was born in 1918. They made their home in that place until 1929, when they moved to Cedar Rapids. Two years ago Mrs. Eckford accompanied her daughter to Madison, where Jean attends the University of Wisconsin.
Mrs. Eckford's life was a pattern of unselfish service to others. Mingled in her nature were those qualities of sweetness and sympathetic understanding that rarely are molded into human form. Self-sacrifice, devotion, tenderness, charity, sincerity, all touched her life with an inspiration that will be reflected beyond this earthly existence.
Mrs. Eckford possessed the character that results from truly fine breeding and righteous thinking. She was courageous, honorable, tolerant, kind.
To her family Mrs. Eckford devoted a lifetime of unselfish service and devotion. Her associations with others were always touched with the same charitable spirit.
Although her interests centered about her family, she was constantly alert for opportunities to develop intellectually, culturally, and spiritually, and to promote this development in others.
A member of the Wisconsin Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Eckford formerly belonged to the Cedar Rapids chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Cedar Rapids College club.
Survivors are the widower and a daughter, Jean; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy C. Prentice, Elkader, and Mrs. G. A. Brandt, Palo; and four brothers, Dr. George Crary, of Hot Springs, Mont., Avery Crary, Los Angeles, Calif.; Dr. E. J. Crary, Choteau, Mont.; and Arthur E. Crary, St. Olaf, Iowa.
At the close of a beautiful life, Mrs. Eckford leaves a spirit which is truly immortal, for her rich philosophy will continue to warm the hearts and brighten the worlds of those who knew and loved her.
