St. Olaf: Rachel W. Thompson was born in Wagner township, Aug. 13, 1861. The daughter of William and Barbo (Lunda) Thompson, both natives of Opdahl, Nummedal, Norway. The parents came to America and in 1854 established a home in Clayton county. Miss Thompson was the last of a family of eight children, six brothers and one sister having preceded her in death. She was a member of the Norway Lutheran church. Her childhood and youth were spent on the home farm in Wagner township. In 1905 she moved to Hot Springs, Ark., where she and three brothers resided for a number of years. After the death of the brothers she returned to Farmersburg where she has lived for the past eighteen years. Miss Thompson died following a short illness at her home in Farmersburg, Jan. 11, 1940, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 28 days. Services were held in the Norway church Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m., Rev. Strandjord officiating. Interment was made at the Norway cemetery. The pallbearers were Helmut Oelke, Otto Kjosa, Ted Thorsen, Ed Johnson, Alvin Larson and Grover Miller. She leaves to mourn four nieces, Blanche, Joyce and Lillian and Mrs. F. A. Moser.
