Clayton County Register, 03 Jan. 1940.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the late home for Mrs. Henry Pahlas, at one thirty, and at two o'clock at the Frieden's Evangelical church. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
The deceased, Mrs. Clara Milwina Pahlas, born and raised in Boardman township, Clayton county, was called to her reward, after being confined to her bed for the past two years, at four a.m., Jan. 01, 1940, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and eight days. Mrs. Pahlas was born Feb. 23, 1868, and was the daughter of Edward and Wilhelmina Meisner.
Mrs. Pahlas was a woman of very few words, but of very fine actions and an appreciative spirit. She was an active member of the Frieden's Evangelical church and its Frauen Verein, and was always willing and happy to fill the pace assigned her. In early womanhood she helped in the care of orphans, nephews and nieces, while at home with her parents. For eight years she had charge of the home of her brother, Ed Meisner, and mothered his two sons, Otto and Oscar.
In the year 1908 she was united in marriage to Henry C. Pahlas and took in the newly established home her niece, Carrie, whom she had taken care of since ten days of age. For 28 years she enjoyed and gave her life to her husband, her niece, and two step-children, Dr. H. M. Pahlas and Celia. Her husband preceded her in death in the year 1936. Shortly after his death she began to fail in health, and for the past two years was confined to her bed, during which time her niece, and step-daughter and step-son did all in their power to make her as comfortable as possible.
The deceased was also a member of the Eastern Star.
She leaves to mourn her departure her brother, Ed Meisner, of Elkader; her niece, Carrie; her step-children, Celia, at home, and Dr. H. M. Pahlas, of Dubuque; her nephews, Oscar and Otto Meisner, of Elkader; two grandchildren Harold and Jane Pahlas, and one great-grandchild.
