Elizabeth Catherine Oliver was born in Kentucky, September 11, 1832, and died October 20, 1910, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Perry Rulon, of Elk Township, Iowa, her age being 78 years, 1 month and 9 days, at the time of her death.
Her parents came from Kentucky to Iowa about 1835 to what is now known as Clayton county and ever since that early time she has made this her home.
On July 28th, 1850, she was married to Robert Ross and to them were born five children: John E. Ross, who died July 14, 1903; Mrs. Jennie Rulon, of San Diego, California; Mrs. Libbie Rulon, of Edgewood, Iowa; Mrs. Alice C. Combs, of Elkport, Iowa, all of those living with the exception of Jennie and Rose, were with her to help care for her during her illness.
Her husband, Robert Ross, enlisted as a volunteer in the Civil war and while on his way to Dubuque to be sworn into the United States service was accidentally injured, which resulted in his death October 15, 1862.
After nearly two years of widowhood she again united in marriage with Hebron Rulon and to this union were born two children, Mrs. Rose Newell of Denver, Colorado, and Philip Rulon, of Elkport, Iowa.
Again death claimed the husband and father July 20, 1895.
Her son Philip, with his wife and little son, made their home with her, and in health and sickness have been kind and truly devoted to her. It was while visiting her daughter Libbie she was suddenly stricken with paralysis and medical attention and all that loving hands and hearts could do or suggest were of no avail for after three weeks of patient suffering she passed to her reward.
In her early life she united with the M.E. Church and later was received as a member of the Christian church. She was a good mother, a kind friend to all, ever ready to extend a helping hand to the sick or needy.
She leaves to mourn her death, her six children, 26 grand children and 17 great grandchildren and many dear friends and acquaintances.
The funeral was held Sunday, October 23rd, at the German M.E. church at Wood, Elder Hubbell of Edgewood, assisted by Rev. Wentland of the German M.E. church spoke words of consolation and cheer to the many friends assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to one whom they had known and loved for many years. A few select songs were sung by a quartette composed of Emory Ash, Ed Wessel, Earle & Claude Rulon. The pall bearers were all old residents of this community: Herman Wessel, Thos. Hamlett, Jacob Fishel, David Leighty, John Brockmeyer and David Hamlett. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. At the conclusion of the services the remains were taken to the Asbury cemetery and tenderly laid to rest beside those of her loved ones who had passed before. May she rest in peace.
