We see by the 'Dubuque Times' that as the western night freight train on the D.&S.C. RR, was coming towards Dubuque early on Tuesday morning, and when near Dyersville, a soldier named Robert Ross, from Elkport, in this county, in passing from the top of one car to another fell, and had both legs crushed just below the ankle. Amputations of both limbs were performed at Dyersville.
~North Iowa Times, Wednesday, October 8, 1862; pg 2
Note: His gravestone in Asbury cemetery gives DOD 10/15/1862, indicating he died of his injuries. Robert Ross was a veteran of John Parker's Company of Iowa Dragoons and at the time of his death had enlisted in Co. D, 27th IA Inf. at Elkport.
The obit of his wife Elizabeth (Oliver) Ross, Rulon gives a great deal of family info.
