Funeral services were held on Monday, March 10, 2003 at 11:00 at the Roberson Funeral Chapel in Strawberry Point, for Penny Lee Carmen, 43, who died on Friday, March 7, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a long battle with cancer. Rev. Al Hock was the officiating pastor. Organist was Fonda Schuchmann and Ev Blobaum was soloist.

Penny Lee Carmen was born on April 22, 1959 to Mary Ann Henke and the late Charles Carmen. She was baptised at the Roman Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN. She attended and was confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point, and graduated from Starmont High School in 1977.

She was married to Robert Peterman in 1977.

Penny was employed at Atwood Factory Machine Co. in West Union, IA from 1977-1982. She was a caregiver in Strawberry Point for four years. She then attended college at NEC in Des Moines, IA from 1987-1989 to become an electronic engineer, and was named to the Dean's List. She was employed by McGregor Loud Speakers as the head of maintenance until the company was moved.

She was then a homemaker, published music writer, and a poet due to health reasons. Her favorite hobbies were playin in a polka band, painting, fishing, surfing the Internet, and visiting friends at the Strawberry Point Drug Store. She especially enjoyed helping people.

Penny could program and de-program, and take apart and reassemble computers. She communicated with people from all over the world. She wrote a song "Good-bye Our Loved Ones," after the September 11th terrorist attacks. She wrote music and also published poetry.

Penny is survived by her husband, Robert Peterman of Strawberry Point; her parents, Mary Ann and Fred Henke* of Strawberry Point; a sister and nephew, Janice and Craig Bell of West Des Moines, IA; and a brother and his wife, Glen and Julie Henke, and two nieces, Ashley and Sophia Henke of Strawberry Point.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, William and Brian, and a sister, Lisa Henke; as well as both her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Penny was a very generous and giving person and will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and the people she has met on her journey.

Interment was in the Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point. Casketbearers were Rod Peterman, Paul Heuchelin, Fred Miene, Cory Nading, Rodney Swales, and Russ Schild.

Roberson Funeral Home of Strawberry Point was in charge of professional services.
