Manfried Friedrich Otto Wilhelm "Fred" Henke, 68, died Sept. 22, 2006, in the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home Dementia Unit from a terminal illness.
Manfried was born Dec. 26, 1937, in Menkendorf-Mecklenberg, Germany. He spent his childhood and attended school in Breman, Germany. With gratitude to his sponsors, the late Arthur and Martha Koehn, he moved with his father and brother to Victor in 1958.
His immediate family followed shortly after. He became a naturalized citizen Oct. 7, 1963 and served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1967.
He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Carmen on Sept. 1, 1962, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bellevue. They lived for a short time in Missouri before making their home in Strawberry Point in 1963.
Manfried continued his trade of bricklaying and was employed by Seedorff Masonry Inc. for 42 years before retirement. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and was involved in the community with various functions and projects.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Henke; two children, Janice J. Bell of West Des Moines and Glen Henke and wife Julie, of Strawberry Point; five grandchildren, Craig Bell, Ashley Sophia, Olivia and Carter Henke; a brother, Peter (Martha) Henke of Medina, Ill.; a sister, Karin (Ray) Wanholm of Crivitz, Wis.; an aunt and uncle, Hildberg and Otto Becker, and two cousins of West Germany; and the Koehns, his naturalization family, of Webster.
Manfried was preceded in death by four children, William, Brian, Lisa and Penny; his parents, Freidrich Wilhelm Ludwig Yoachim Johann Henke and Ilse Johanna Wilhelmine Marie Becker-Henke; and sponsors Arthur and Martha Koehn.
The family will be greet[ing] relatives and friends for the visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Roberson Funeral Home, Strawberry Point. His visitation will continue one hour prior to the service, which is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Strawberry Point, with Pastor Jason Cooper officiating. Burial will be at Cass Cemetery, Strawberry Point.
