Clayton County Register, 08 Nov. 1939.
Volga City: Frank Edmund Ambrose was borne at Volga City on May 20, 1856, and died Nov. 04, 1939, aged 83 years, five months and 24 days.
He was the second son of James and Anna Ambrose. His father was the first adult buried in Hill Crest cemetery in Volga City. His entire life was spent in this community. He attended the rural school and later was a pupil in the Elkader school.
On Dec. 25, 1880, he was united in marriage with Adella Blair, daughter of a neighbor, and they established their home on the farm east of Volga, now owned by F. L. O'Brien.
Mr. Ambrose was a successful farmer and for many years was township assessor and also secretary of the school board.
In 1914 he and Mrs. Ambrose retired from the farm and moved to Volga. His brother, Herbert, also made his home with them. Mrs. Ambrose died on March 25, 1937, and Herbert died on Dec. 06, 1937. After the death of his brother, Mr. Ambrose still kept the home open, but after a few months his health began to fail, and he died Saturday, Nov. 04.
He leaves to mourn his departure, a half-sister, Mrs. Orpha Boyer of Arlington; a niece, Mrs. Bertha Weiler, of Charles City; and many friends who will long remember the Ambrose family.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Ernest J. Starr, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga. Casket bearers were Wm. Hoskyn, R. D. White, John Follon, James Bowles, Walter Everitt and Edw. Everitt.
Among those from out of town attending the funeral were Mrs. Bertha Weiler, Charles City; Mrs. Orpha Boyer, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. J. Arnold, Strawberry Point, and Mr. and Mrs. James Bowles and son George, of Wadena.
