John H. Possehl, who was born in Read township, this county, on November 11, 1876, died last week, Tuesday, shortly before nine p.m., at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 20 days.
Mr. Possehl operated a farm with his parents until the year 1905, at which time he took up residence in Garnavillo. Here he worked as a general laborer, but was occupied for the most part as a mason. His life suffered a break approximately a year ago, when he took ill. He suffered from heart and kidney trouble. Nevertheless, he continued to live in Garnavillo until April of this year, when it was deemed advisable that he live with his sister in Elkader. Thus, he spent all but four weeks of the remaining months under the care of the Wm. Huebner family. These four weeks were spent in Finley hospital, Dubuque, where he underwent a major operation. However, he did not regain his strength and spent the last three weeks of his life confined to his bed. Weakened by his ailments, and the fact that he could not retain his food, he died shortly before 9:00 p.m., Tuesday.
Funeral services were held at the Wm. Huebner home in Elkader, and at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Garnavillo, Friday, Nov. 03, Rev. Meyer officiating. Burial was made in the new Garnavillo cemetery.
The deceased is survived by one brother, Fred Possehl, of Read township; two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Huebner of Elkader, and Mrs. Herman Pruess of Monona; also three nephews and seven nieces.
Those relatives attending the funeral from a distance at the Wm. Huebner home, last Friday afternoon, are as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arndt and Mrs. Lou Mundt, of Rockwell; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Arndt of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Will Schave, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Schave, and Mrs. Chris Schwienefus, all of Castalia; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Suckow of Clermont; and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Possehl and Darlene, of Edgewood; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kruse and Leonard, of Elkport.
