Clayton County Register, 08 Nov. 1939.

Funeral services for George J. Roeder were held from the Witt Funeral chapel and the Evangelical church yesterday afternoon, with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

The deceased, George John Roeder, was the son of Conrad and his wife Wilhelmina Roeder, and was born January 27, 1865, at Elkport, Iowa. He died Nov. 04th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Staack, here in Elkader, at the age of 74 years, nine months and seven days.

Mr. Roeder spent his entire active life in Elkport. He received his education in the public schools of Elkport, and at the age of 14 he started to learn the blacksmith trade under the tutelage of his father, which trade he followed the rest of his active life.

In the year 1888, on February 11, he was united in marriage to Lena Warnicke at Elkader. Four sons and two daughters were born to this union. One son, Allen, preceded his father in death on May 25, 1925. The five surviving children are Mrs. Elsie Martin, Mrs. Carl Staack, Harry, Carl and Frank Roeder, all of Elkader.

While a resident of Elkport, Mr. Roeder, besides taking care of his business and home, found time to serve his fellow citizens by serving on the school board, as town clerk for many years, and various other town offices. He was also a member of the Woodmen's lodge.

In the year 1924 the deceased was forced to retire on account of poor health, and since that time has made his home in Elkader. For the past three years he suffered the severe affliction of losing sight in both of his eyes.

He leaves to mourn, besides the aforenamed children, his wife; one sister, Mrs. Caroline Gruell of Butte, Montana, and 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wm. Muench, Ed. Livingood, Chris Meyer, Henry wolf, Henry Brust and Wm. Musfeldt.
