William Probert, born March 30, 1858, on the old homestead in Highland township, died at his home in Volga, Aug. 16, 1939, at the age of 81 years, four months and 16 days. He was the oldest son of eight children born to James and Euphamie Probert. Three sisters, Janette, Mary and James have preceded him in death.
His early life was spent on the farm, but at the age 17 he went to make his home with his sister Janette in Sylvan, Wis. Here he met Mary Grim, whom he married Jan. 01, 1880. One son, Oaklin, was born to them in Wisconsin. In 1884 they came to farm in Highland, where two children, Ernest and Eva, were born.
He remained on the farm until 1910, when he and his wife and daughter Eva came to Volga, where he has since made his home.
Mr. Probert was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church, succeeding his father as an elder of the church, which office he held until his death.
His wife and son Ernest preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss, a son Oaklin, daughter Eva, two brothers, George of Sargent, Nebr., and John of Volga; five grandchildren: Mrs. Herman Peterman, Dean and George Probert, of Volga, Glen Probert of Elkader, William Probert of Albert Lea, Minn., and one great-granddaughter, Carolyn Sue Probert, and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Aug. 18, at 2 o'clock in the Presbyterian church, with Rev. H. O. Bethel in charge of the services. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga. The casket-bearers were Robert Duff, William Smith, Thomas Lendman, Ross Downs, James Probert and Henry Andreae.
