Clayton County Register, 30 Aug. 1939.
Funeral services for John H. Bernhard were held Thursday afternoon from the Giard Methodist church, the Rev. M. C. Melcher officiating. Surviving him are the widow, Mrs. J. H. Bernhard, and one son, Byron C. Bernhard, and eight grandchildren. Two daughters, Mrs. A. S. Wickersheim and Mrs. Fred Hardtke preceded him in death.
Surviving also are four sisters, Mrs. August A. Kruse of Monona, Mrs. Tillie Sampson of Colesburg, Mrs. William J. Allert of Froelich, and Mrs. Dickman of Farmersburg, and two brothers, William and Arthur Bernhard.
Mr. Bernhard was a kind husband and a good father. He was active in church and civil affairs, and Monona has indeed lost a good citizen. The large attendance at his funeral showed the esteem in which he was held.
