Clayton County Register, 17 May 1939.

Kate Barthel, daughter of Samuel Moyer and Sarah Young Moyer, died May 08, 1939, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Otto Weisner, in Charles City, Iowa, after an illness of three weeks.

She was born June 15, 1865, in the Valmah Bunting house on Main street, Elkader, and has lived within three blocks of her birthplace during her entire life, except for three years which were spent on the farm now owned by Elmer Wilke.

She taught in the schools of Clayton county; also the primary department of the Elkader school, where she had 80 pupils under supervision at one time.

On Jan. 04, 1894, she was married to Alfred Barthel, also a teacher in the Elkader school. He preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1905.

To this union six children were born: Gladys (Mrs. Wm. Hunt) of Estherville, Iowa; Karl of St. Louis, Mo.; Beatrice (Mrs. Otto Weisner) of Charles City, Iowa; Eston of Midland, Mich.; Lyle of Elkader, and Donald of Flint, Mich., who, with a sister, Mrs. Estella Frobauch of Ashland, Ore., four grandchildren, many nephews, nieces and friends, mourn her passing.

The family had planned a reunion at the Karl Barthel home in St. Louis, Mo., on Mother's Day, May 14, but due to her sudden illness the reunion was held at Charles City on April 25th, at the Otto Weisner home. This was the first time the six children had all been together since 1917. Mrs. Barthel had three sons in the World War.

She was a member of the Service Star Legion, the Royal Neighbors, Eastern Star, and Ladies Guild of the Congregational church.

It was her wish that her former pupils assist in the last rites. They were Henry Wolf, Henry Leonard, Sid Powell, Dean Prouty, Don Munger, Max Bishop, Ella Crowe, Ida Wilke, Eva Crowe and Wm. Witt.

The services were held at 1:30 at her home, and 2 o'clock at the Congregational church, the Rev. N. O. Bartholomew officiating. Her body was placed beside her husband in the East Side cemetery.
