W. E. Looby, a resident of Farmersburg until about 25 years ago, was killed by a train in Minnesota Lake, Minn., last week Tuesday as he was at the railroad station with other townsmen awaiting the arrival of a train bringing a body there for burial.
Mr. Looby was born in Farmersburg, Aug. 25, 1876, the son of Ed. W. and Margaret (Barnum) Looby, and at the time of his death had reached the age of 62 years and eight months.
He was united in marriage with Amanda Hagensick and until 25 years ago he followed the trade of harnessmaker in Farmersburg. At that time the family moved to Decorah where he operated a restaurant for a time and then went to Nunda, S.D., where he operated a general merchandise store. From there the family moved to Rapid City, and thence, about a year ago, to Minnesota Lake, Minn.
The body was brought to the Oelke Mortuary here and from there taken to St. Joseph's Catholic church where funeral services were conducted by Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. P. Taken. Burial was made in the family lot in Monona.
Besides his widow, Mr. Looby is survived by two sons - Dr. W. E. Looby, Highland Park, Ill., and Morris Looby of Los Angeles, Calif. - and two daughters, Mrs. James James, Custer, S.D., and Mrs. Van Crouter of Los Angeles.
Other survivors are: Four sisters, Mrs. Henry Oelke, National; Mrs. Bert Mathews, Oelwein; Mrs. Mabel Engelhardt, Springville, Iowa, and Mrs. Nels Arveson, Sioux Falls, S.D., and two brothers, Charles and Richard Looby, the former of Luana and the latter of Farmersburg.
Relatives from a distance attending the services here were: Dick Looby, Ed. Looby and Jim Looby, all of Artesian, S.D.
