Clayton County Register, 12 Apr. 1939.
CLAYTON CENTER: Elmer Henry Christian Lahrs departed this life on April 06th, at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Willis Hoth, where he had been employed the past two years. He was born on May 06, 1904, in Boardman township, therefore had reached the age of 34 years and 11 months. He was the son of Carl Lahrs and Minnie Glawe Lahrs and was baptized in the Clayton Center church in June of the same year. He received the common school education and was confirmed in the Evangelical church of Elkader. He was a member of the Luther League of Zion's Lutheran church.
His father died in 1932 and he took over the work on the farm for two years, and since that time has been employed as a hired man on various fams in this community.
Death came as a result of an attack of the 'flu,' after which pneumonia set in. He had been ill only about a week and a half. His death came as a shock to all, for the doctor had pronounced him well out of danger only the day before.
His passing leaves to mourn, his mother, who was at his side when death came; three sisters, Mrs. Emil Schuety, Mrs. Fred Schuety, and Mrs. Verni Bahls. Also many uncles and aunts, four nieces and five nephews, together with a host of other relatives and friends. His presence will be missed by all who knew him, but One who is above has seen fit to call him from this world, and to his will we must all submit.
Funeral services were held Easter Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Clayton Center, the Rev. O. M. Meyer officiating. Pallbearers: Melvin Breitsprecher, Clarence Polkow, Freddie Lahrs, Karl Glawe, Lloyd Glawe and Leroy Glawe.
