John Froelich, one of the Froelichs after which the town of Froelich was named, passed away at his home in St. Paul, Tuesday, May 23, McGregor friends have been informed. Mr. Froelich was born November 24, 1849 on the Froelich homestead in Giard township, passing away at the age of 83.
He was married to Kate Bickel many years ago. Mr. Froelich, son of Henry Froelich, built a big elevator at Beulah when the narrow gauge railroad was built, later moving the elevator to Froelich when the road was purchased by the C.M. & St. P. He was a dealer in grain and stock. He often preached at the Giard church, local friends recall.
In 1893 he built the first gasoline tractor ever operated in this section and probably in the midwest, and the next year he went to Waterloo where he started a tractor factory. About 30 years ago he moved to St. Paul, where he has since made his home.
He is survived by two daughters and one son, three brothers and two sisters, his wife having preceded him in death several years ago.
