Clayton County Register, 11 Jan. 1939.

Elkport: Henry Berns, one of the pioneers of Volga township, died at the home of his son, Marvin, Sunday morning. The deceased was 76 years of age. Funeral took place on Wednesday, in Cox Creek Catholic church. Burial was made in St. Michael's cemetery at Elkport.

Henry B. Berns, son of Peter and Mary Berns, was born Aug. 16, 1862. He was one of eight children, three girls and five boys. He was the last of that generation on either side of the family, his brother Theodore died a year ago the day Mr. Berns was buried.

On Jan. 05, 1883, he was united in marriage to Minnie Futtrer, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Futtrer. They farmed near Elkport and Garnavillo for some time. To them nine children were born, Adeline dying in infancy and Kathryn at the age of 12. In 1914, Mr. Berns retired from farming and purchased a home in Elkader. In 1918 he purchased the farm his son Marvin has lived on since, and he also purchased the home on East street in Strawberry Point where he and his family lived practically until his wife's death, Jan. 18, 1930, which occurred at the home of their son John in Elkport, after which he made his home for seven years with his daughter, Mrs. Irene Quinlan and family. About a year and a half ago he went to the home of his son Marvin, and family, at whose home he resided until his death Jan 07, 1939. Funeral services were conducted in Sacred Heart church at Cox Creek. Services were conducted by Rev. Mahon of Cresco, Rev. Olinger of Elkport, and Rev. P. J. Boyle. The two mass servers were his two grandsons, Edgar Quinlan and Howard Berns. The choir was assisted by Mrs. Eva Prouty of Elkader. The pallbearers were six nephews: Roy Berns, Raymond Berns, Otto Berns, John Zapf, Irvin Scheffert and Frank Scheffert. Burial was beside his wife in the Garber Catholic cemetery. Funeral was in charge of L. Zearley of Garber. Services at the grave were conducted by Rev. Olinger. He leaves to mourn his death, the following children: John Berns, Garnavillo; Realto Berns, Garber; Edwin Berns, Elkader; Marvin Berns, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Elvira Klink, Elkport; Mrs. Josie Meder, Guttenberg, and Mrs. Irene Quinlan, Strawberry Point; twelve grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Rosalee Klink.

Relatives and friends from out of town who were pesent at the funeral were: C. D. Gleason, New Hampton; Mrs. Elizabeth Sone and Gordon, Garnavillo; Mr. and Mrs. I. Scheffert of Monona; Mrs. E. Eischeid of Elkader; Bill Buckmann of Dubuque; Don Meder of Iowa City; Mrs. Eva Prouty, Niel Finnegan, Dr. L. A. Meder and Albert Meder, all of Elkader; Dr. and Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. C. Lou and Leonard LaBarre, all of Guttenberg; Mr. and Mrs. Linus Quinlan and Pat, Elizabeth and Frank, of Delmar.
