Clayton County Register, 09 Nov. 1938.
Charles F. Peick died suddenly, Thursday, Nov. 03, at 2 :30 p.m., at his home here, following a heart attack.
Charles Frederick Peick was born January 03, 1870, at Littleport, the son of Frederick and Sophia (Possehl) Peick, and at the time of his death had reached the age of 68 years and ten months.
Up until 16 years ago he followed the life of a farmer, but in 1922 he settled here in Elkader, which has since been his home. He was united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1893, to Anna Hochhaus, here in Elkader. Three daughters were born to this union, who, together with the widow, survive. They are: Hilda (Mrs. Joe Downey) of Littleport; Sophia (Mrs. Art Miller) of Elkader; and Ottilie (Mrs. John Farrell) of Elkader. Seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Joe Wick of Dubuque, and Mrs. Minnie Liddy of Chicago, and two brothers, Wm. Peick of Strawberry Point, and Fred Wagner of Canada.
The deceased was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church here, and of the Modern Woodmen. For many years he was active in the work in connection with the local fair, and for many years held office in the Communia Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance association, where he was very active.
He served his township as a trustee and his name was on the ballot again this year for re-election, when death overtook him. In spite of his outside activities, Mr. Peick was a man who enjoyed his home and the company of his family, and it will be his family which will miss him most.
Elkader has lost a good progressive citizen; the family a true husband and a kind father.
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church last Sunday forenoon, and burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery with the Rev. J. P. Taken officiating. Casket bearers were Frank T______, G__ Mentzel, Chris Meyer, George Ehrhardt, John Becker and Ben Meyer.
Relatives and friends from a distance attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Art Hogbin of Topeka, Kan., Mrs. Elsie Haubold, Holton, Kan.; Art Geiger and family, Mrs. Joe Schlitz and son, Ben Gitselbauch and Family, Charles Oneyear and family, and Geraldine Wick, all of Dubuque; Chas. Bauer and family, Buena Vista; William Nuehring, Guttenberg; Wm. Peick and family and Mr. and Mrs. Max Opitz, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Fred Hochhaus, Edgewood, and Mrs. Minnie and Jack Gleason of New Hampton.
