Funeral services were held last Thursday, Oct. 20, for Mrs. Madge Barnard, who died at her residence, Oct. 18, after an illness of one hour.
Madge Drips was born May 06, 1859, at National, Iowa, so had reached the age of 79 years, five months and twelve days.
She was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Drips, being one of five sisters, two of whom survive. She and her parents spent their entire lives in Clayton county, and she had lived in Elkader 60 years.
She was united in marriage with Henry Harrison Barnard on Christmas day, 1878. He died on June 06, 1924. To this union one son was born, Ransom Drips Bernard, who, for nearly 30 years, has been a practicing physician in Clarion, Ia.
He and his wife, one granddaughter, Mrs. Bernice Black, and one great-grandson, Bruce Barnard Black, are the immediate members of the family who survive.
She was a charter member of the local Congregational church, of the O.E.S., and also of the Coterie, as well as the organizer of the local D.A.R. chapter. She was a diligent Red Cross worker during the World War, and interested in the Civic Improvement society.
At her request, Mrs. Grace Morse sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and "We'll Never Say Good-bye in Heaven," at the short memorial service held Thursday afternoon at the residence. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery. Casketbearers were Wm. Becker, John Becker, John Hempel, Gus Graf, Clarence Murphy and E. W. Carlsen.
Those from a distance who attended the services were Dr. Della Drips, Mrs. Hubert Drips, and Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Drips, of Rochester, Minn.; Mrs. Bernice Black of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; Miss Sue McLanahan, Mrs. Werges, Mrs. Ruth Luce, of McGregor; Mrs. John Killen, Miss Marnie Killen, Mrs. Maude Wilson and Mrs. Bruce Everall, of Monona; Byron Newberry of Strawberry Point.
