Herman William Louis Mueller, a native of Germany, was born Dec. 28, 1860, and died at his country home in Read township, this county, Oct. 15, 1938, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 17 days. Mr. Mueller spent the first 24 years of his life in his native country. He received his education in the schools of Germany. He was baptized in infancy, and on March 21, 1875, he was confirmed at Klein Beuster, Germany.
In June, 1884, he came to America and made his home in Read township. He worked as a farm hand in Garnavillo township the first six years that he was in America.
On Dec. 19, 1890, at Clayton Center, he was married to Amelia Pahlas. They then settled upon the farm, where the deceased spent the rest of his life. Seven children were born to this union: Herman L. Mueller of Elkader; Mrs. Ernest (Bertha) Wiese, Dubuque; Mrs. Henry (Lucy) Reimer, Elkader; Herbert Mueller, St. Olaf; Harvey Mueller, at home, and Harry Mueller, Elkader. One daughter, Irvina, died eight years ago.
The deceased's whole interest lay in his work and the welfare of his family. He enjoyed unusually good health throughout his life, until about a year ago when heart trouble developed, and a short time ago suffered a light stroke.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, the aforenamed children, 13 grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
Services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon, October 18, at 1:30; at Friedens Evangelical church at two o'clock, and burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
