Clayton County Register, 25 May 1938.
Ruthferd Clemence, son of Chris and Rosine Anderson, was born on the home farm in Marion township, Dec. 18, 1919, and died Thursday morning at eleven o'clock, May 19, 1938, at the age of 18 years, five months and one day.
He was baptized by Rev. Arveson, Jan. 01, 1920 and confirmed by Rev. Strandjord in the Marion Lutheran church, Sept. 02, 1934. He took an active part in his church, being a member of the Luther League and church choir, up to his illness and death.
He received his early schooling at the home school, district No. 6. After finishing the grades he attended high school at Clermont for two years, and since has been attending school at Postville, being a senior there this year. He was a member of the Future Farmers chapter, besides many other responsibilities in the school.
Ruthferd was taken ill April 12. The following day he was taken to the Decorah hospital, where he submitted to a appendix operation which was very serious. Remaining there for 28 days, he was given every possible care by hid doctor, nurse and mother. He was then taken to his home, where all hopes for recovery were looked forward to, but at the last days he grew weaker and suddenly passed away. He was a patient sufferer, trusting faithfully in Jesus as his only Saviour. Some of his last words were, "Leave it to the Lord and He will take care of us all."
Ruthferd was an ambitious worker in school, as well as at his home duties. If there was anything to be done, he always did it. He was a true friend to all who knew him, and every acquaintance he made in school and every-day life was a friend to the last.
He leaves to mourn his departure, father and mother, six brothers, Kenneth, Myron, Elver, Carlyle, Dale and Arvid; one sister, Bessie, all at home; his grandmother, Mrs. K. Mork; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 and at the Marion Lutheran church at 2:00, Sunday afternoon, May 22, with the Rev. Mr. Ramsey preaching the sermon. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.
The pallbearers were: Almer Gulsvig, Howard Hanson, Lloyd Loftsgard, Randolph Reierson, Orlando Loftsgard, and Lloyd Reierson, and the senior class, Future Farmers Chapter boys, and high school faculty led the procession to the grave. - Contributed.
