Clayton County Register, 13 Apr. 1938.
STRAWBERRY POINT: Lloyd Carpenter, 38, was found last Wednesday evening in the John Grassmeyer garage, his body hanging from a rope which was fastened to a beam overhead.
Carpenter had not been seen since noon of the same day, and, because his son, Lloyd, Jr., had left that day for the CCC camp in McGregor, it was thought he had accompanied him to Elkader. When it was found that he was not in Elkader, search was made here and his body was found in the Grassmeyer garage. Coroner Leslie Oelke of Elkader was called and he concluded that this was clearly a case of suicide, and no inquest was held.
Carpenter, since Mr. Grassmeyer's affliction, has been driving the latter's car. From all appearances, Carpenter had entered the garage and latched the door after him. He then took a small rope and attached it to a beam about three feet above his head and to his neck and then stepped off the running board of the car. When found, one foot was on the ground, the other still on the running board. Friends say that Carpenter was despondent.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, with the Rev. Hobart M. Grant, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Casketbearers were: Everett Gilbert, Jesse McLane, Clifford Mierson, Lloyd Dillon, Jud Blanchard and Harry Behrens. Burial was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
Lloyd Ernest Carpenter, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Carpenter, was born in Cox Creek township, Oct. 10, 1900. At an early age he moved with his parents to Strawberry Point, where he graduated from the public school with the class of 1920. He took great interest in athletics and was a member of the high school basketball team for four years.
June 21, 1920, he was united in marriage with Elsie Behrens of Elkader, but a few years ago this couple separated. He is survived by two sons, Lloyd Jr. and Donald; his father; two sisters, Mrs. Ewald (Hazel) Rembold, and Miss Harriet of Strawberry Pint, and one brother, Wesley, of Tulsa, Okla., besides other relatives and friends.
