Clayton County Register, 23 Mar. 1938.

Mrs. D. D. Murphy.

Funeral services were held last week Thursday forenoon at St. Joseph's Catholic church here for Mrs. D. D. Murphy, who had died at her home here Monday morning, March 14th following an illness of two and one-half years.

Mrs. Murphy was born September 30, 1867 in Guttenberg, the daughter of Johan and Caroline Johansen and her entire life was spent in this county - between Guttenberg and Elkader. At the time of her death she had reached the age of 70 years, five months and 14 days.

On June 06, 1888, Henrietta Johansen was united in marriage, in Guttenberg, with Daniel D. Murphy and to this union one son - Clarence F., was born. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy came to Elkader in the year of their marriage and this has been the Murphy home ever since.

It is only natural, after a residence of such long duration, that Mrs. Murphy should have established a large circle of friends who were first grieved when they heard of her illness and then finally learned of her death.

Mrs. Murphy loved her home and her family best. Though she took pride in the state-wide recognition given her husband, who preceded her in death on May 30, 1931, her first thought was always of her home and her family and the kindly hospitality she could offer to friends from far and near. Because of these qualities she was never very active in social circles but the activities of the community as a whole had her interest just the same.

Two brothers preceded her in death also. Charles Johansen in 1929 and William Johansen in 1910. She is survived by her son, Clarence F. Murphy, local attorney, and three grandchildren - Lorna, Kathleen and Barbara Murphy, besides a large circle of friends.

Casket-bearers last Wednesday were: A. J. Johnson, E. C. Fitzpatrick, W. C. Dittmer, L. J. Ehrhardt, Dr. L. A. Meder and H. L. Meyer. The Rev. Father James P. Taken conducted the services in the church and at the burial in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Friends from a distance who came to attend the services were Dr. Francis Murphy of Milwaukee, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Robbin Murphy of Fort Dodge and F. A. O'Connor and son Charles of Dubuque.
