Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon in McGregor for W. W. Phelps, prominent attorney, who had died at the veteran's hospital in Des Moines last Tuesday. Mr. Phelps had reached the age of 50 years.
When he failed to recuperate properly following an automobile accident last December, Mr. Phelps was taken to the Des Moines hospital, where death overtook him.
A World War veteran, Mr. Phelps had been active in all Legion activities, serving as Commander of the McGregor post, of the county and district groups, and also holding offices in the state Legion department.
He was active in republican circles and in civic affairs of his adopted city. He served on the McGregor board of education, on the council and in other social and business organizations.

Funeral services for William W. Phelps were held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon, March 11. His death occurred at the veterans hospital in Des Moines, Tuesday, where he had been taken for treatment a week before, for injuries received last December. He had severe injuries about the face, especially nasal. Later, erysipelas set in, and another operation became necessary. Recovery was very slow and it was finally decided to take him to Des Moines.
Attorney Phelps was born in 1885 in Illinois, and later moved to Britt, where he graduated from high school. He took his course in law at the State University of Iowa. He enlisted in the regular army in 1916 and saw service in the Philippines, later being in the army in Siberia during the World War. He was always active in all Legion activities, serving as Commander of the local post, of the county, district, and has held state offices. He was active in republican politics also.
The funeral services were in charge of the Masonic lodge and the Legion, Rev. Glenn McMichael of the Methodist church officiating. The Masons, Eastern Stars, Legion and Auxiliary members attended the services in a body. The county bar association was also represented by a large group from the various towns in the county.
He is survived by his wife, one brother, and several nephews and nieces. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
