VOLGA: Mary Richmond Duff, daughter of William and Marion Duff, was born in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland, Oct. 20, 1851, the youngest member of a family of six, all of whom preceded her in death. She died at her home in Highland township Feb. 23, 1938.
In 1852 she came to this country and settled in Pittsburgh, Penn., remaining there until 1858, then came west and settled in Highland township, which has been her home for 80 years. She was one of the early settlers.
On March 11, 1872, she was married to Frederick Smith, who preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1909. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Fred J. and William R., both of Volga; and three daughters, Mrs. Marion Pollock, Volga; Mrs. Mary Neuenkirk, Oelwein, and Mrs. Celia Zurcher, Lamont; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was a life-long member of the presbyterian church. She was of a cheerful disposition and a firm believer in the doctrine of good will. Her life has left an inestimable impression for good in the community.
