Clayton County Register, 16 Feb. 1938.
Strawberry Point: Funeral services for Fred Betts were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Hobart M. Gable. The pallbearers were Lewis Gamm, Henry Gibbs, W. J. Byrnes, P. J. Cassidy, Frank Conner and George Halsted. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
Frederick Betts, son of Daniel S. and Anna Betts, was born in Whiteside county, Belle Plain, Ill., on March 01, 1868, and died at his home Sunday morning from complication of diseases and heart trouble. He was the youngest of eleven children, five brothers and four sisters having preceded him in death. The eldest of the children, Mrs. Kate Hankensen, who is 93 years of age, still survives. On August 26, 1890, he was united in marriage to Sarah Grace of Cedar Creek, Ill. To this union four daughters and three sons were born. Mr. Betts resided on the farm where he was born until he was 49 years of age, when he and his family came to Strawberry Point in February, 1907, moving on what is known as the Ward and Noble farm east of Strawberry Point. There he farmed for ten years, after which he moved west of Strawberry Point, and then near Arlington, where he still followed the occupation of farming until 1927, when he retired and moved to town. For the past seven years he has assisted in our beautiful cemetery. He kept up his work there until October 01 of last year. Since then he has gradually failed in health, but was up and about his home and up town most every day until Christmas Day.
Since January 01, he has been a patient sufferer and confined to his bed most of the time, and death came as a release from that terrible pain and suffering Sunday morning. His loving wife cared for him through all his sickness, and his four daughters and one son were with him since Friday, when it became known his time was very short. Besides his sorrowing wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Albert (Edna) Wesley, of Lamont, Mrs. Faye (Effie) Nelson, Mrs. Joe (Alice) Komark and Mrs. Earl (Sylvia) Gamm, all of Strawberry Point, and one son, Harley Betts, of Arlington; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; also his aged sister, Mrs. Kate Hankensen, of Belle Plain, Ill. Two sons, Daniel and Ralph, preceded him in death.
