Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Gene, ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hakert, at the home, and burial was made in the Mederville cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
Gene Milton Hakert was born at Mederville, Iowa, October 04, 1927, and died January 01, 1938, at the age of ten years, two months and 27 days.
Gene spent his entire life in Medervlle. He was confined to his bed for three weeks before death called him to his reward. He attended the public school at Mederville, and was loved by his classmates and all who knew him. He took part in all activities of the school, the last being a Thanksgiving program. He was a friend, not only to those his own age, but was also loved by the elderly people who knew him, and he enjoyed their friendship and association.
His death is mourned by his parents; two brothers, Gregor and George; one sister, Mrs. Greta Freitag; his grandfather, George Olinger, and grandmother, Mrs. Caroline Hakert; one nephew, Neil Eugene Freitag; also several aunts, uncles, cousins and a large circle of friends.
Classmates, schoolmates and his teacher, Miss Rhoder, of the Mederville school, marched in a body to the cemetery. They were led by six flower girls, carrying showers of pink carnations and ferns. The flower girls were: Marion Hubbard, Cleo Hubbard, Mary Margaret Leonard, Jean Nading, Margaret Rose Nading ad Wilma Alderson.
Casketbearers were: William McTaggart, Alfred Kramer, Stephen Leonard, Blair Kelly, Hyram Zittergruen and Melloy Zittergruen.
Out-of-town friends attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hohman and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hohman of Chicago, and Mrs. Emma Graham of Dubuque.
