Clayton County Register, 01 Dec. 1937.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at one-thirty at the late home and two o'clock in Frieden's Evangelical church for Mrs. Emma Schmidt, with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

Emma Schmidt, the daughter of Dedrick and Helene Kregel, was born in Garnavillo township, Clayton county, on February 17, 1865.

She was one of a family of eight children; one brother and three sisters preceded her in death. There now survive her two brothers, George of Nebraska City, Nebr., and Alvin of Garnavillo, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. C. J. Roggman of Garnavillo, and Cornelia Drahn, Denver, Ill.

Her parents were among our early pioneers, and she was reared during that age. She took her part in the family life and accepted the burdens required of every child in that period.

The educational advantages of the time were afforded her and she developed a high degree of skill in the arts of the household and particularly that of exquisite and fine needlework.

During all of her lifetime she was a member of the Lutheran faith. In 1880 was confirmed at Garnavillo, and has been an active and continuous member of Frieden's Evangelical church of Elkader since its foundation, and was the second president of the Frauen Verein. Up to the time that her health made it impossible, she took an active part in the church work and in its societies.

On October 08, 1891, she was united in marriage with Chris G. Schmidt in Clayton Center, Iowa. Following her marriage, she and her husband took up their home in Elkader, where she continued until her death.

Her husband preceded her in death four years ago, November 12.

To this marriage were born four children: Mrs. Alma Franke, St. Louis, Mo., G. H. Schmidt, Elkader, Mrs. Helen Dittmer, Elkader, and Mrs. Christine Meyer, Elkader, who together with the grandchildren, mourn her passing.

Aside from church work, her sole interest and concern was home and family. She continued this interest and responsibility until June 26, 1937, when she was stricken with a severe and painful illness that culminated in her death.

The solicitude of her children and grandchildren was a source of great comfort to her and great consolation to them. She accepted with fortitude, courage and hope the illness that befell her. Her faith and courage will be rewarded by Him upon whose strength she relied.

In her extremity she had the consolation of religion and the ministration of her church.

To those who mourn we commend these comforting words of hope and promise:

"Peace shall come in the day which is known unto the Lord and it shall be neither day or night, such as now is, but everlasting light, infinite brightness, steadfast peace and secure rest.

Lift up thy face therefore to Heaven; behold I and all the saints with me, who in this world had great conflicts, do now rejoice, are now comforted, now secure, now at rest, and they shall remain with me everlastingly in the Kingdom of My Father."- (Thomas A. Kempis - Of the Imitation of Christ) - Contributed.
