Clayton County Register, 13 Oct. 1937.
Fairview: James Bowman, pioneer farmer and resident of the Fairview community, three miles north of Colesburg, died Sunday evening, having attained the great age of 95 years. He was born in Monroe county, Pennsylvania, Aug. 27, 1842. When a young man, Mr. Bowman came from his native state and settled near Osterdock, Iowa. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Hansel, Dec. 27, 1871. A little later this ambitious young couple located on a farm that has ever since been their home, on the Elkport-Colesburg road. This place has been their home for sixty-seven years. Here they reared their family of three daughters, who are Mrs. Alta Zearley, Garber, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Schweikert, also of Garber; and Mrs. Elva Gull of near Colesburg.
Those surviving the passing of Mr. Bowman are his wife, the three daughters as named, five grandchilden, and seven great-grandchildren.
In his childhood Mr. Bowman was baptized in the Lutheran church, in Pennsylvania, and he never changed that relationship. He was preeminently a man for his home. He cleared the timber from the land and developed the farm and comfortable home in which he lived so many years. He never sought public office, but was known as an upright citizen, industrious, looking well into affairs of his own family and farming. His death takes another of the community's real pioneers from us.
