Clayton County Register, 13 Oct. 1937.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at one o'clock for Mrs. Fred Baars in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kishman, in Monona, and at two o'clock in the Evangelical church here; with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
Mrs. Rosalie Baars, daughter of Wm. and Anna Heitkamp, was born Jan. 27, 1860, in Cox Creek township, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kishman, in Monona, on Oct. 08, 1937. The deceased reached the age of 77 years, eight months and eleven days.
In the year 1879, on February 04, the deceased was united in marriage to Fred Baars. Four children were born to this union. One daughter, Margaret, died in infancy. The three surviving children are Wm. A. Baars of Elkader; Agusta, Mrs. Chas. Plagman of Elkport; and Elizabeth, Mrs. Alfred Kishman, of Monona.
Mrs. Baars spent her entire life in Clayton county. Until 1911 she resided on a farm in Cox Creek township. Deciding to retire from active life, she and her husband came to Elkader to live. They were permitted to enjoy 14 years of retired life, when the angel of death called her husband to his reward. After the death of her husband she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Kishman, where she made her home until her death.
Like all early settlers, Mrs. Baars was called upon to endure many hardships that were always present in those days. To add to her burden, her mother died early in life and left a brother and sister to her care. This she did well, and when she established her own home she found her joy and satisfaction in life working and taking care of her loved ones. In later life her joy was found in having the children visit her, and a real mother's welcome was always awaiting them.
Mrs. Baars had been in failing health for some time but was only confined to her bed for one week before the angel of death called her to her reward.
Besides the aforenamed children, she leaves to mourn her departure one brother, Wm. Heitkamp, of Elkader; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Stillinger, of Colesburg; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The deceased will not only be missed by her loved ones but also by a large circle of friends.
