Clayton County Register, 06 Oct. 1937.

VOLGA: Our community was saddened when we received word of the death of Mrs. Mattie Copeland.

Mattie Marble was born Oct. 30, 1866, in Michigan, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Marble, resided. She was the youngest daughter of a family of three boys and three girls. When Mattie was ten years of age, the family moved to Iowa, where she attended school and spent all her early life in and near Volga.

November 04, 1855 (??), she was united in marriage to John Copeland, one of Volga's most respected young men. To this union were born five children. Four of them died in infancy or early childhood, leaving one daughter, Neva, to bless their future years. They later adopted a son, Leon, a most promising boy, to whom they gave all that an own son could receive, in love and care; but he too, at the age of ten years, died, leaving them again sorely bereaved.

The family resided in Hopkinton, Iowa, for a time, where educational advantages were desired for the daughter. In 1917 the Copelands moved to Montana, where the father engaged in the lumber business.

In 1925 Mr. Copeland died, and mother and daughter established a home in Missoula, Mont., and where they have since resided, Miss Neva being dean of girls in the large Missoula County high school at that place.

Mrs. Copeland united with the Methodist Episcopal church at an early age. Later she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church, to be with her husband and daughter, and where she was always active in every good work.

She possessed a vivid personality, was loyal to her friends, and cheerfulness and optimism radiated from her presence.

She died Sept. 15, 1937, at Missoula, after a protracted illness, ministered to by her daughter, who gave her every care possible.

Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. David Jackson, at the funeral home, the morning of September 16, after which the body was brought to Volga, accompanied by Neva. Relatives from Portland, Ore., together with many friends, attended this service.

Upon arrival in Volga Saturday morning, Sept. 18, short graveside services were conducted by Rev. Wray, pastor of the Volga Presbyterian church, which was attended by many friends and relatives of this place, and by her sister, Mrs. Alice Calkins, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and by Mr. and Mrs. Clements and Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, of Detroit, Mich., nieces and their husbands, of the departed. An only brother, Oscar Marble, of Portland, Ore., was unable to attend.

The sympathy of many neighbors and friends is extended to the bereaved ones.

(Note: The article gives her birth and Marriage years clearly, but they are obviously at odds. Researchers will need to ascertain them.)
