Katherine Jane Hughes, eldest daughter of James and Margaret Hughes, was born in Lycoming county, Penn., on August 22, 1847, and died Sunday evening in the home of her daughter. When eight years of age she came with her parents to Iowa and lived here until 1861, when with her parents she moved to Ohio, but stayed just one year, when they again returned to Iowa.
April _, 18__, she was married to Charles McKinnis by W. M. Pollard on the farm now owned by Clarence Pugh. On April 11 they left on their wedding trip in a covered wagon for California, and after more than four months of weary travel over the plains, with dangers of Indians, buffalo and other wild beasts, arrived at Donner Lake, Calif., in the Sierra Nevada mountains August 15, where they spent the Winter. In May 18__, they returned by way of Sacramento, across the isthmus, to New York, and then back to Iowa, where she has made her home ever since in Clayton county near Strawberry Point.
There were three children born to Mr. and Mrs. McKinnis, __ssie McKinnis McCarron and __vert McKinnis, both now deceased, and __jie McKinnis McTaggart of Strawberry Point, with whom she lived. Mr. McKinnis passed away 40 years ago.
Besides her daughter, Mrs. McTaggart, she is survived by 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and one brother, (looks like Burrows Hughes) of Littleport.
