Clayton County Register, 02 June 1937.
Jacob W. Steen, son of Joachim Henry Frederick Steen and Henrietta Freese Steen, was born on a farm in Boardman township Jan. 17, 1860, and died on his home farm 1 1/2 miles from his birthplace, May 24, 1937, being 77 years, four months and seven days of age.
He was the third child in a family of nine children. Doris, Mary, Jacob, John, Lizzie and Martin reached maturity, three having died in infancy. John passed away July 10, 1936. Martin is the last survivor.
Mr. Steen received his education in the rural schools of Boardman township, and followed his chosen occupation of farming.
He married Miss Ida Greve July 01, 1885, and immediately moved on the farm now operated by his son Jake and family. Here he and his wife lived and enjoyed a happy, prosperous life for 49 years, until her death Oct. 19, 1933. He continued to reside on the farm, receiving the loving care and devotion of his children and their families.
When but a mere baby, his father was called to serve his country in the Civil War.
All his children, who resided near him, namely, Mrs. Mary Hughes, Littleport; Wm. F. Steen, Elkport; Fred W. Steen, Elkader; Jake W. Steen, Elkader; Clara I. Henning, Elkader; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild are left to mourn his departure.
Mr. Steen was a man of sterling qualities, a decisive man whose integrity was unquestionable. Loyal to family, friends and neighbors, always ready to render assistance to anyone. Everyone sensed the welcome extended in the Steen home the moment he entered it.
He loved nature and was never happier than when he was working in God's beautiful out-of-doors. He was a successful farmer.
A good man has gone but his wonderful influence remains.
Funeral services were held from the residence Wednesday, May 26, Rev. Paul Kitterer of the Evangelical Lutheran church officiating. Burial was in the Communia cemetery. The casket bearers were: D. E. Livingood, Wm. Wistrick, Joe Cords, Louis Tieden, Frank Tieden and George Tieden.
"We will be patient, and assuage the feeling,
We may not always stay.
By silence sanctifying not concealing,
The grief that must have way.Faith alone can interpret life, and the heart
That aches and bleeds with the stigma
Of pain, alone bears the likeness of Christ,
And can comprehend its dark enigma.-Contributed by a friend.
