Clayton County Register, 26 May 1937.

Charles Dohrer, prominent Cox Creek township farmer, was killed instantly early Sunday morning when a tractor backed over him and crushed his chest. He was found by Mrs. Dohrer.

Mr. Dohrer was making some adjustments on the tractor in the barn. The motor was running and in some manner the machine dropped into gear, with the result as already stated.

Mr. Dohrer was the son of John August Dohrer and his wife Mary F. Homman. He was born Feb. 20, 1875, in Cox Creek township on the farm where he met his death.

On June 14, 1905, he was united in marriage to Augusta Meyer at Elkader. Nine children were born to this union. Bessie Lucile was called home when but twenty-two months old. The eight surviving children are: John A. Dohrer of Volga City, Mrs. Martha Crimmins and Mrs. Hilda Clough of Dubuque, Harold of Garber, and Katherine, Mildred, Charles and Robert, at home.

Mr. Dohrer was a faithful husband and father. He was well thought of by all who knew him and was considered a good farmer. He served as vice president of the Volga creamery, and for a number of years served as a director in his school district. He was also a member of the Royal Neighbors. He was a member of the Evangelical church here.

The deceased had the misfortune to have his right hand cut off in a shredder in the year 1918. Of late he has been bothered with rheumatism, but according to human judgement might have enjoyed life on this earth for a number of years.

Besides the above named children he leaves to mourn his departure his wife, three brothers, A. A. of Elkader, H. V. of Volga City, Rudolph of St. Paul, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Wistrick, of Elkader. Also nine grandchildren, and a large circle of friends. The deceased reached the age of 62 years, three months and three days.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home in Cox Creek township, and then from the Evangelical church here, with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

Relatives and close friends from a distance attending the funeral included: Glen Dohrer of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ohms and Oliver and Marie Meyer of Nashua, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Homman of Waukon, and Rudolph Dohrer of St. Paul, Minn.
