Clayton County Register, 28 Apr. 1937.

With the death of Mrs. Sophia Munger Tuesday morning, April 20, Elkader again lost one of its pioneers.

Mrs. Sophia Johanna Dorothe Munger, nee Lamcke, was born June 17, 1857, in Volga township, Clayton county, Iowa. Mrs. Munger reached the age of 79 years, ten months and three days.

Mrs. Munger was baptized in infancy and on April 09, 1876, at Clayton Center, Iowa, was received into active membership of that church by the rite of confirmation. After making her home in Elkader, she united with Friedens Evangelical church and became a member of the Frauen Verein.

Although quiet and unassuming by nature, those who knew her learned of her deep interest and love for the welfare of Christ and the church. She was also a member of the D.U.V., Eastern Star, and Royal Neighbors. She was a faithful wife and mother and took care of her household duties well.

Mrs. Munger was called upon to go through much suffering the last few years of her life, but through it all she remained uncomplaining and submitted herself patiently to the will of the Lord and Master. She was afflicted with asthma and about three years ago had a severe attack and was confined to her bed for a long period. A short time after the recovery from the above she had the misfortune to fall and injure her hip which again forced her to remain in bed for several months. During the last year her health declined steadily and for the last two months she was confined to her bed continually.

On May 17, 1879, in Elkader, she was united in marriage to Milo E. Munger, and they had the rare privilege of celebrating their golden wedding in the year 1929. Four children were born to this union: Frank of Nora Springs, Florence Jacobia of Postville, Henry of Kekaskum Wis., and Vern of Baltimore.

She leaves to mourn her departure: her husband, the four above named children; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Brand of Oshkosh, Nebr., and Mrs. Augusta Clemens of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also a large circle of friends.

Services were held from the home Thursday, April 22nd, at 1:30, and the Evangelical church at 1:45. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery with Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
