GARBER: Whitney Amsden, nearly 80, died at his home here last Thursday, April 22, of a stroke in January which left him bedfast since that time. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Meyer, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and burial was made in Mt. Harmony cemetery.
Whitney Amsden was born May 10, 1857, at Osage, Iowa. When only a small boy he, with his parents, sisters and brother, came to Clayton county, settling in Mallory township.
On March 20, 1883, he was married to Louise Brase of Guttenberg. For fifty-four years they have spent their life together, which has been hard work, sunshine and sorrow.
He was a man of his word, upright and honest, always willing to lend a helping hand where help was needed. He was always very active up until two years ago when he was stricken and began failing.
When, in January, he had another stroke, he was left bedfast for the last three months. Thursday, at three o'clock in the morning he died.
He leaves to mourn his aged widow, two daughters and five sons, namely, Mrs. Mary Wenkstern of Edgewood, Pete Amsden of Elkport, Fred Amsden of Garber, W. L. Amsden of Zwingle, Ben Amsden of Greeley, Mrs. Ervin Schaal of Delhi, and Edward Amsden at home. Besides these, he leaves to mourn 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
