Clayton County Register, 28 April 1937.
Mrs. Margaret Demo, who died recently at her home at National at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 23 days, was one of Clayton county's pioneers. She came to this county with her parents from North Island, Vermont, when only nine months of age.
She grew to womanhood there and received her education in the public school of National. On May 21, 1875, she was united in marriage to Abraham Demo. She and her husband, pioneers that they were, cut the trees and planted the new-turned sod. They endured many trials and hardships to establish their home one and one-half miles east of National.
She attended every Clayton county fair that was held, in spite of her ill health and the infirmities of old age. She loved to entertain and
visit with all who happened her way and she was ever kind and sympathetic for the sick and unselfish and generous with the needy. Her husband and one son, Frank, preceded her in death. Surviving are; three sons, John of Harpers Ferry; William of St. Cloud, Minn.; Robert on the old home farm; four daughters, Fannie (Mrs. Robert Furgerson), Nellie (Mrs. Fred Schmidhelm), both of McGregor; Augusta (Mrs. R. F. Hagensick) and Ruth (Mrs. Ed. J. Schmelzer), both of Monona. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the National church conducted by Rev. Feller, an old friend, of Edgewood, and Rev. Melcher of Giard. Dr. Todd and Merle Wirkler rendered several vocal selections.
Casket-bearers were: Carrol Wright, Burton Wright, Ernst Weller, E. S. Clark, Leo Frommelt, Helmuth Wirkler, Walter Wright and Fred Bruckner, old friends and neighbors of the deceased.
