Guttenberg: Mrs. Bernard Nieland (nee Elizabeth Dorweiler), lifelong resident of this community, died at her farm home in Jefferson township on Thursday morning at 2:20 o'clock, at the age of 73 years, four months and eight days, following an illness of a long duration. Mrs. Nieland was born on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton county, Iowa, on November 20, 1863, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dorweiler, both deceased, pioneers of this community. She received her education in the Guttenberg schools.
On Nov. 23, 1886, she was married at Guttenberg to Mr. Bernard Nieland. Last autumn Mr. and Mrs. Nieland celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home. After their marriage they settled on a farm in this township, where the deceased spent the remainder of her life.
Her death is deeply mourned by her husband; two sons, Gernard Jr., of Jefferson township, and Edward of Guttenberg; three daughters, Clara (Sister M. Blasia) of St. Francis convent, La Crosse, Wis., Mrs. Anton Halle of Colesburg, and Miss Hildegard Nieland at home; a number of grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Allendi_k of Cresco, and Mrs. John Haas of Canova, S.D.; three brothers, Paul Dorweiler of Salem, S.D., Ben Dorweiler of Guttenberg, and Henry Dorweiler of Winona, Minn. Four sons have preceded the mother in death.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here Saturday morning, with interment in St. Mary's cemetery.
