Clayton County Register, 03 Feb. 1937.

On Jan. 31, Paulina Katschkowsky died, following a very brief illness, reaching the age of 77 years, one month and nine days.

During her last days, she was ministered to by her children and friends, who had the sorrowful, yet consoling, opportunity to render such human comfort as was possible so that her remaining days upon this earth might be made as comfortable as could be.

She was born Dec. 22, 1859, at Clayton Center, this county. She was the daughter of J. B. and Caroline Schmidt, the eldest of 13 children. Only one brother survives her death, Henry Schmidt, of Seattle, Wash. Her parents were among those settlers who opened this country and helped develop it and make it what it is now.

At the age of five years, in company with her parents, she came to Elkader. She made her home with her parents in Elkader until the time of her marriage. When Friedens Evangelical church of Elkader was organized, she became one of its charter members. She was also a charter member of the "Frauenverein." With her passing, Friedens church loses a faithful and conscientious worker.

On April 08, 1880, she was united in marriage to Herman Katschkowsky, and for a few years after their marriage they lived in Elkader and later moved onto the farm in Boardman township on which they lived until 1910. In 1910 she and her husband moved to Elkader, where they made their home until the time of her death. Her husband preceded her in death on June 19, 1916.

She has left to mourn her passing, her four living children: George Katschkowsky, Fred Katschkowsky, William Katschkowsky, and Mrs. Carrie Hochhaus, all of Elkader. Her brother, Henry Schmidt, of Seattle, Wash., ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two of her children, Gusta and Henry, died in childhood.

Her life was circumscribed by the circle of her family. Before all things else, she ministered to their wants and needs. Of a kindly and diffident nature, she unobtrusively made herself a part of all those who came in contact with her. She was interested in the happiness of those about her, and was thoughtful of the little attentions that make life happier and more pleasant. For this she will be mourned, for her kindness, her charity and her thoughtfulness, she will be long remembered.

Services were held from her home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, and Friedens Evangelical church at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
