Clayton County Register, 03 Feb. 1937.
Garnavillo: Gladys Dorothea Hedeman* was born at Mederville, Iowa, December 30, 1910. She was the oldest child and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chettinger. Her childhood was spent near the community of Littleport. When eight years of age, her parents moved to Grant county, Wis., where she grew to young womanhood. She received her academic education in the Livingston public schools, with the exception of a part of her senior year. Due to the fact that her parents returned to Iowa, she was graduated from the Garnavillo high school in 1929.
She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers college and became a teacher. After successfully teaching for two years, she was married to Robert Hedeman of Garnavillo in May 1932. They began their brief but happy married life by returning to Cedar Falls, where her husband attended summer school, and other summers which followed.
Since her husband was in the teaching profession, they first lived at Garnavillo, where he taught in a nearby rural school. In 1934 they moved to Alpha, Iowa, where they lived until her untimely death, which was due to nephritis. Evidence of this disease appeared while she was yet a child. She was near death several times before her final attack, which came while with her mother near Strawberry Point. Death came peacefully after she suffered several convulsions. Her age was 26 years and 25 days. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and several local societies.
She was permitted the privilege of three happy and long-cherished experiences before her death: a trip to the west coast and Yellowstone park, a visit with several old school companions, and attendance at the Golden Wedding of her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Hedeman, on Jan. 17.
She was always kind and loving. Her life was an example of clean habits and thoughtful deeds. Those left to mourn her death are her loving husband; her mother, Mrs. Ralph Chettinger; also two brothers, Ray of Strawberry Point, and Gerald of Edgewood. Her father preceded her in death by three months. Many other relatives and friends join them in their mourning.
Funeral services were held in the home of Mrs. Ralph Chettinger at Strawberry Point, and at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church in Garnavillo, conducted by the Rev. M. J. Harder, Jan. 26. Interment was made in the Garnavillo cemetery.
Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral of Mrs. Hedeman were: Mrs. J. Bemis, Mrs. R. Proctor, Supt. and Mrs. Jensen and the school faculty of Alpha, Mrs. Calvin Cooney and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chettinger and family of Manchester, Mr. and Mrs. George Chettinger and family of Garber, Irvin Scott and family of Edgewood, Mr. and Mrs. George Meyer and Miss Irene Meyer of Postville, Mrs. Walter Falb of Elgin, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hedeman, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Ihm and Mrs. Edna Scholz of Guttenberg, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Godden and family of Lawler, Bert Godden of Prairie du Chien, Mrs. John McGuire and Mrs. T. Godden of McGregor, and Mr. and Mrs. H Dahling and family and Bill Dahling and family of Littleport.
